NEBRASKA/NORTHWESTERN - Final Thoughts

What a game! The first Power 5 matchup of the year does not disappoint. Northwestern takes down Nebraska in Ireland by a score of 31-28. That first drive by Nebraska was a beauty, but when Northwestern ran a short-side sweep on third down in the red zone on their first drive, I knew B1G football was back. And back it is, as Nebraska suffers the first upset of the season. Not to brag, but if you read my Nebraska RSW total blog, you’d know that I had a feeling this was coming. Let’s take a look:

As you can see, I sniffed this one out. People were far too high on Nebraska coming off a 3-9 season in which they proved an inability to win close games. Mark Whipple wasn’t remedying all their issues. Nebraska scored a couple of times in the transfer portal bringing in Thompson and Mathis, and suddenly, the likes of Josh Pate were talking Big Ten championship. I felt like I was going insane the entire summer, and it’s nice to be vilified. Nebraska will have to fight for 6-6, whether that’s with Frost or not.
It is absurd how, in the end, it was Frost that lost them that game. The onside kick was absurd. Northwestern was hanging on by a thread, and Frost threw them a life vest. More than that, he abandoned his team in the open waters to go save a drowning enemy crew. And he’s always been like this! *insert definition of insanity*
Thompson looked good early, but that's about all the good that came from this for Nebraska. The defense gave up 527 yards and was equally as bad in pass pro as they were stopping the run. They looked out of sync and lost. They have a couple get right games before hosting Oklahoma in week 4, which could be a long day if they don't figure it out on the line of scrimmage. It starts with Frost, and I don't have much hope there.
It will be interesting to see if the Nebraska boosters keep him around any longer. I believe they save a significant portion of the buyout if they wait until October to axe him. Either way, you have to imagine the boosters have been on a conference call since the game ended. This could be an interesting week in Lincoln.
